Stress, Writing Anxiety, and a New Book

This year has been a bit of a suckfest writing-wise–mostly because of constant, unrelenting stress and anxiety–both personal and environmental. And the constant, unrelenting stress led to depression and more stress and anxiety over being depressed and unable to write. (Hello, vicious circle. I see you there. Now, move the fuck along.)

However, I’ve been working really hard, since our annual writers retreat in June, to reorganize my life. (hahaha) Okay, I’m at least making sure I write every day – or as close to it as I can get. Even with all of the editing and other day job work I’m doing, I’ve still been writing, and I’ve been SO. MUCH. HAPPIER.

I love the stories I write. Obviously…I wouldn’t bother writing them if I didn’t. Duh, Bron. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have my favorites. For the longest time, Drawn That Way held the top spot in my heart for many reasons. And I’ll always love Rory and Tristan, but I believe they’ve been dethroned by Angus and Eliza.Writing their story was incredibly emotional for me–because of their shit and my shit–all the shit, really. But I’m pleased with how it came out, and I’m so happy to share it with you guys!

Because…it’s here!!!

Rewritten is finally out!!! It’s the next book in The Bound Series that I share with my girl, Jess Jarman.

Here are the people I envisioned while writing. Because, really, any day I can spend fantasizing about Aidan Turner and Karen Gillan and call it work is a good day.

That came out all weird, but I feel like you guys know what I mean.

And here’s the blurb:

Betrayed and completely exposed, she’d sworn off kink. Hell, she’d sworn off men. But she hadn’t counted on him…

One of the hottest voices in Sci-Fi, Angus Domhnull is renowned not just for his sweeping sagas, but for his stupidly gorgeous looks—and the fact that he’s taken almost five years to finish his latest novel. Now, assistant editor, Eliza Burrows, is stuck minding him, and his brooding nature is pushing every sexually submissive button she has. But even if Angus wasn’t her publisher’s star author, he’d be off-limits—after a painful betrayal, Eliza doesn’t play anymore, and she’s not about to start again with him.

Unable to deliver his long-awaited manuscript, Angus is saddled with a keeper—and her creative input—that he never asked for. Despite the resentment and animosity brewing between them, he finds himself drawn to Eliza. As he learns more about the intriguing woman behind the prickly facade, he falls for her, hard and deep.

When the attraction between them ignites, Eliza lets Angus bring her to one place she swore she’d never go again—her knees. He wants more than just her submission, but her past and the secrets she’s hidden could destroy everything…

Rising Blood is Out!

Hey Everyone!

Just a little book news to start out the year. Rising Blood which was part of the Dark Pursuit anthology is now out as a single!

Check out the gorgeous new cover Kris Norris made for me!

Rising Blood (1)

Blurb:

Vampire hunter, Harper Yovanoff, is not happy. Ever since her former partner vanished, she’d been content to work alone. Unfortunately, her boss doesn’t feel the same way. Harper’s been assigned a new partner—a new partner who’s an utter pain in her ass. Elliot Zielin is panty-meltingly gorgeous, but he’s also reckless, not to mention, insufferably arrogant. If he’s not careful, the vampires will be the least of his worries.

Elliot knows he should play nice with his new partner, but he can’t resist poking the bear—the tiny, angry bear who’s so freaking beautiful, she makes him ache for things he shouldn’t want. Despite the fact that Harper has a stake with his name on it, he keeps pushing.

When a powerful vampire begins actively stalking and turning hunters, Harper and Elliot are forced to work more closely together than ever in an effort to save their own. With tempers and adrenaline high, letting off a little steam goes way too far, and they both end up in a place they never expected. The threat against them increases and fighting their growing feelings for one another becomes impossible. But if they can’t stop the sire hell-bent on their destruction, all the love in the world won’t save them from becoming the very thing they hunt.

Excerpt:

Harper was already waiting in the middle of the far sparring mat that had been set up in one of the out buildings on the property. She’d pulled her hair back into a braided ponytail and had traded her jeans and t-shirt for black yoga pants and tank top. The stretchy fabric clung to her body, and the color contrast practically made her ridiculously pale skin glow. If it wasn’t for the flush that stained her flesh every time she was furious with him, he might have been concerned that a vamp had worked its way into the organization.

Christ, she was beautiful. With her delicate features and flowing black hair, she made him think of a maiden in a tower in need of saving—a princess. He almost laughed. Saving was the last thing Harper needed. She had the rescue part covered.

As if she felt his gaze on her, she whirled to stare at him, hands on her hips. She was small and solid. She couldn’t be more than five-two or five-three, but she was strong. His chest still ached a bit where she’d slammed herself into him.

Though he tried not to, it was nearly impossible not to let his gaze drop to the soft curves of her breasts and hips. But, he managed it, keeping his focus on her glittering blue-green eyes.

“You ready to get this over with?” she asked.

He tossed his towel on a stool next to the mat. “Ready as I’ll ever be.”

Lifting her hands, she beckoned him forward. “Bring it.”

The second his foot hit the mat, he charged her, but she neatly sidestepped him as he’d expected. Pivoting behind her, he slipped an arm around her waist in an attempt to lock her to him, but she slammed her elbow into his gut and brought her head back toward his face. He shifted, and she ended up smacking her skull on his collarbone, instead.

Wrapping his free arm around her chest, he yanked her flush to him and tried to ignore the press of her ass against his groin. Before he had a chance to worry too much about it, she grabbed onto his arms and heaved her body forward, lifting him in the process and flipping him over her shoulder.

He landed hard on his back, but the fact that she was so much shorter than him slowed his momentum, and he didn’t have as far to fall. But, the landing still jarred him a bit. Snaking out a hand, he grabbed her ankle and jerked up, tugging her legs out from under her. He thought he heard her mutter “fucker” as she hit the floor.

She attempted to roll away from him, but he kept hold of her ankle. She kicked him in the hip with her free foot, and the impact was enough to loosen his grip, and she lurched free, leaping to her feet before diving for him again. He twisted to the side before she could tackle him. Clearly realizing in mid-move that he wasn’t where she’d hoped he’d be, she tucked her head and somersaulted to her feet and spun around to face him then lunged again.

He lost track of how long they’d gone at it. All he knew was he was winded and sweaty, and so was she. She watched him through narrowed eyes, and he could tell she was searching for anything she could use as an exploitable weakness.

Distantly aware some of the other hunters had gathered around the outer edges of the mat, he heard them discussing his and Harper’s odds, and he was pretty sure money had changed hands a few times. So focused on kicking his ass, he was equally sure Harper had no idea they were there.

Ignoring everything but the woman slowly circling him, it was impossible not to feel the anger that rolled off her in waves. Her rage and frustration were clear on her face. Her expression hid nothing. Despite her temper, her physical responses were carefully controlled and deliberate.

What would it take to get her to make a mistake? How far could he push her before that unyielding restraint faltered? He grinned at her. “Getting tired, princess?”

Her eyes narrowed further. “Go fuck yourself.”

Holding her gaze, he deliberately let his gaze slide up and down her body as his hand drifted down across the front of his sweatpants. “Oh yeah. I’ll definitely be doing that—just as soon as we’re done. You can stick around and watch if you want.”

Elliot recognized the exact moment her rigidly held restraint snapped. Something that sounded like a growl escaped her throat, and she launched herself at him, tucking herself into a ball at nearly the last minute and plowing into his shins and taking him to the floor. The fall knocked the air from his lungs. Wasting no time, she straddled him, tightening her thighs around his waist and chest, squeezing mercilessly. Drawing her arm up, she paused briefly before she mimed driving a stake into his heart.

Before she could make imaginary contact, he grabbed her wrist in one hand then wrapped the other around her upper arm on the opposite side. Throwing her to her back on the mat and following her over, he straddled her, his ass resting lightly against her groin. Keeping hold of one wrist, he quickly snagged the other one and transferred it to the first hand, pinning her arms above her head.

The noise that escaped her was nothing short of a snarl, and he couldn’t deny he was more than a little turned on. That desperate sound didn’t help matters. Grunting, she slammed her hips upward, trying to dislodge him. That didn’t fucking help, either. She did it again, harder this time.

Leaning forward, he braced his free arm on the mat next to her head and hooked his feet between her thighs, yanking them apart, taking away the small amount of leverage she had. He lifted his hand from the floor and gently wrapped his fingers around the soft skin of her throat.

Her eyes widened, and her pupils suddenly dilated, the black nearly swallowing the pale aquamarine color. Her pulse pounded erratically against his fingers. If anything, it seemed to increase the longer he kept his hand there.

“It’s over,” he murmured quietly—too quietly for the other hunters to hear.

She arched impotently against him, struggling against his greater weight and reach.

“If I were a vamp,” he whispered. “Your blood would already be filling my mouth.”

She stilled beneath him, and he couldn’t look away from her face. His gaze dropped to her slightly parted lips more times than he wanted to admit.

“And mine would be filling yours. There’s no way you’d just be a happy meal.”

Seductive: Erotic Tales of Incubi is out today!

Cassie Donoghue and Verity James’ new book is out today!  Read on for excerpts!

In their first published anthology (just in time for Halloween!), The Dirty Dames bring you two dark tales of possession and the women who succumb to the power of a demon lover.
In Cassie Donoghue’s “Hotter Than Hell,” college senior Tayla is overwhelmed with dreams of a dominating, otherworldly lover. Once he finally convinces her to summon him from beyond the earthly realm, Tayla becomes subservient to his every desire.
Excerpt:

An ache developed. Tayla squeezed her thighs together, her body involuntarily responding as she daydreamed.

“Ms. Williams,” a man’s voice pulled her from her thoughts. “Would you care to join us, or would you rather remain in la-la land?”

She opened her eyes and glanced around the table, remembering she was still in class. “Sorry, Professor.” Scott, her crush of the last three years, looked back at her and Tayla blushed as if he just read her naughty thoughts. She glanced down, fiddling with her notes as Professor Olson dismissed the class.

“Tayla,” Olson said as she was placing her notebook in her bag. “May I speak with you before you scurry off?”

She swallowed, but nodded her consent and slipped her satchel on her shoulder. “Is something the matter, Professor?” Tayla asked as she stepped closer.

“You seem distracted,” he noted as he tossed his legal pad on his desk before pulling off his glasses and staring at her. Suddenly the blue of his eyes struck her; she’d never noticed how attractive he was hidden behind those spectacles. His long golden hair was pulled back into a low ponytail and his blue oxford shirt clung nicely to his sinewy build, while his chin was sensuously covered in a trim beard. He was elegantly masculine.

“Oh?” Tayla tried not to think about him, the ten years age difference that laid between them, or the ache her daydreams had created between her thighs. “Just a lot on my mind.”

His voice was deep, baritone, rich, with the smallest linger of an accent. “How’s your studies going?”

“Okay.” She shifted her weight and sighed, no doubt looking annoyed to be there, but it was just the sexual frustration talking.

Professor Olson lifted a brow. “Only okay?” He crossed his arms over his broad chest and Tayla saw the veins ripple in his forearms. Unconsciously, she wet her lips. Olson smirked. “Why don’t you stop by the study group later this evening? That is if you don’t have a Halloween party to attend, or some wild hunt to join with Odin.”

She gave him a look, secretly smiling at his teasing; her focus studies were Norse culture. “I think Wodan can spare me tonight.” Tayla stepped closer, looking at him up through her lashes. Oh god, was she flirting with her professor? Was this what her stupid sex dreams had turned into? “What’s the address?”

“459 Crystal Avenue, Apartment 12C.” Olson softly brushed the back of his index finger down her cheek as he towered over her. “See you there.”

Once she’d pulled herself away from his gaze, Tayla headed for the ladies restroom. She placed her messenger bag on the counter and splashed her face with water, then stared into the mirror. “Oh girl,” she spoke to her ginger-haired reflection. “What have you gotten yourself into?”

Verity James’s “The Devil You Know” is the story of Jack, a paranormal expert and exorcist, who is bitten by the subject of his latest job: an incubus. In a desperate attempt to contain the demon until the infectious period ends, he goes to the one woman he knows likes it a little rough. Can she handle the demon lust burning him up from the inside or will its ferocity overtake them both?
Excerpt:

Fifteen minutes later, she’d cleaned his wound and he’d downed half a bottle of whiskey. He’d thought maybe the alcohol would dull things, calm him down, but it had only made him burn hotter. His head swam with lust and need, and he set the glass he’d been nursing onto the table before it shattered in his grasp. It was a slow acting poison, all things considered, and Jack thought that was one blessing he’d certainly be grateful for tonight.

Melissa was standing at the sink, washing his blood from her hands, and before he knew what he was doing, he’d moved to stand behind her. She was so close he could hear the life pulsing beneath her skin, the blood rushing through her veins. He inhaled the warm feminine scent of her, his throat suddenly dry with his desperation.

“Mel?” he rasped, and when she turned around, smiling so sweetly at him, he took a step back. He was trying to keep the monster at bay, at least until he could offer her some sort of explanation for what was about to happen, what he needed from her.

“Yeah?” Her brow furrowed and she laid a hand on his chest when he didn’t answer. The heat of her hand practically burned through his shirt, he was so sensitive to everything right now. “Jack? What is it?”

He steadied himself with his hands on her arms, thumbs stroking the oh god, so soft skin beneath her elbows and his jaw clenched. He had to choose his words carefully; he needed her too much tonight to get himself kicked out of her apartment. He needed her to understand. “I need…” Jack shook his head, trying to organize his thoughts. “Look, my job is pretty dangerous.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Obviously.”

His hands tightened on her arms and she flinched but didn’t pull away, her eyes searching his for answers he wasn’t sure he could give her. Jack continued, his voice shaky because the thing inside was starting to fight him and fuck, he didn’t think he could hold onto it much longer.

“Sometimes things happen I can’t explain and tonight, I just need you to trust me.” Jack let go of her arms, turning away so he didn’t have to face her. He’d never asked her for anything but a few hours, and this wasn’t exactly how he wanted to start. “Please, just believe that I don’t want to hurt you and if you fight me…”

He heard her suck in a breath and the quickening pace of her heartbeat raced in his ears. Her scent changed as his words sunk in, want tinged with a little bit of fear made for a heady mix and he was afraid it was going to push him too soon. Too soon. “Just don’t fight it, Melissa,” he managed, heat washing through him until everything shimmered and refocused and he spun around to face her again.

Jack’s lips curled into a feral smile when he saw her, and he admired the defiant tilt of her head belied by the glitter of tears in her eyes. “Don’t fight what, Jack?”

He licked his lips, cocking his head to the side as he raked his eyes over her. “How much you want me,” he answered, a laugh rumbling low in his chest as he crossed back to her. It was his voice ringing in his ears, but it was different and dark and his heart pounded with a thousand new sensations he could feel like pinpricks in his skin. Hypersenses, the small semblance remaining of his rational brain explained. Jack swallowed hard. “Because I know, Melissa. I can smell it on you.”

My story is called Rising Blood and it features a couple of vampire hunters whose partnership involves a lot of…animosity. And a fair amount of tension. Really, they’d just as soon strangle each other than work together.

The heroine, Harper Yovanoff, really does not have time for anyone’s shit. Especially not her partner’s. And Elliot Zielin? Well…he’s not sure who’s pissing him off more. Harper or the vampires that are targeting their colleagues.

In my head, this is what they look like.

Bronwyn - Harper

Katie McGrath

Bronwyn - Elliot

Eoin Macken

If I had to pick a favorite character in this story, it would have to be Elliot. Yes, he’s arrogant. Yeah, he can be reckless. And yes, he’s kind of an asshat. But there’s a kindness there that he doesn’t let many people see. And a vulnerability that he’d prefer no one saw. And when he falls, he falls hard—it’s hard not to love that.

Be sure to check out Jessica, Kris, and Paige’s posts.

Cover Reveal for Out of Sync!

I’ve been busy, busy, busy. It’s amazing what getting rid of a bunch of negativity and stress can do for one’s productivity!

But I wanted to share my shiny new cover for my upcoming release, Out of Sync. It’s the 5th book in my and Jess Jarman’s Bound series, and the lovely Kris Norris made the gorgeous cover. It’ll be out in a few weeks.

out of sync

Ten years ago, Morgan Weaver walked away from everything he loved—his burgeoning career as a composer, his cello, and his best friend, James. Family obligations and guilt keep him tied to a job he hates, and his dreams have collected even more dust than his instrument.

James Shepherd was left reeling when Morgan abandoned not only their dreams of writing and performing together, but their friendship. James forged on to become an internationally known musician, but he’s always felt Morgan’s loss and has never been able to shake the feeling that he’s responsible for the other man’s choice to leave everything behind.

A simple request from Morgan’s sister brings the men together in a way neither of them expected, and long-denied desire bubbles to the surface overwhelming them both. Knowing it’s only temporary, Morgan finds himself lost in a haze of submission, finally able to experience being at James’ mercy and determined to enjoy it while it lasts. James, however, has other plans and is equally determined to show Morgan he can have all he’s ever wanted—including what they have together.

Excerpt:

James stared at Morgan. His wide gaze kept darting between James’ eyes and his lips, and his expression bordered on desperation and need. It was a much better look than he’d had earlier. He only seen Morgan that defeated one other time, and he refused to let it happen again—not if he could stop it.

He tightened his fingers in Morgan’s silky curls and tugged back his head. Giving Morgan all the time in the world to stop him, James slowly lowered his face, but once he touched Morgan’s lips, he was fucking lost. They parted on a gasp, and James wasn’t sure if it was the need for more air or to speak. All he knew, was that Morgan’s mouth was open, and he was sweeping inside, tasting the smooth sting of scotch and the warmth of the man he’d never stopped wanting.

Morgan’s fingers clenched on James’ arms, but he didn’t push James away. Instead, he just hung on. James slid his other arm around Morgan’s waist, and pulled their hips flush together. The groan that that escaped Morgan’s lips as their hard cocks ground against each other was the most delicious thing James had ever tasted.

Anger and lust slammed together, and he kissed Morgan harder, deeper, walking him backward until his back was against the wall. When he’d come home and found Morgan dozing on the couch with his computer open and empty glass of scotch, he’d lost it. He’d thought he was getting through to the other man—helping to pull him out of his self-imposed corporate prison. But leave him alone for one night, and he was right back fucking to it.

And the way Morgan had snapped back had sent James’ emotions careening everywhere. Pride in the fact that Morgan had stood up for himself. Arousal that mixed weirdly with that pride. Worry for whatever had set him off in the first place, because he knew that as explosively angry as Morgan had been, it hadn’t been directed at James—not all of it anyway. And concern that this man that he cared about was going to continue to trade his happiness for a life of misery and servitude. All of his emotions twisted together until the only action that seemed remotely sensible was to kiss Morgan like he’d been dying to since James had shown up his office less than a week ago.

He trailed his lips down the side of Morgan’s neck, nipping with his teeth, drawing little shudders out of the man. His fingers convulsed on James’ arms, and every little bite drew Morgan’s hips forward in sharp little jerks.

“Jamie,” he breathed. “What are you doing?”

He trailed his lips up to Morgan’s ear then sucked the lobe between his lips and flicked at it with the tip of his tongue before releasing him. “I’m doing what you told me to.”

“What…I—” his sentence ended on a gasp as James raked his teeth over that same bit of flesh.

James drew back a bit so he could look into Morgan’s eyes. His pupils had practically swallowed the warm brown of his irises. He dragged the pad of his thumb across Morgan’s full bottom lip. “You told me to do what I wanted, remember?”

He nodded, somehow managing to appear both desperately aroused and ready to bolt at the same time.

“So that’s what I’m doing.” James chuckled quietly as he tilted his head back and forth as he considered his next words. “Well, maybe not exactly what I want.”

“No?” Morgan’s voice came out rusty, like he rarely spoke.

“Well, you’re not tied up and naked, and I’m not finding out all the pretty shades of pink your arse can turn.”

Morgan’s eyes dilated a little further, and his breath caught, his chest lifting and holding tight against James’.

“Nor is my prick buried balls deep inside you, so…no. I’m not doing quite what I want. Not yet.”

Morgan swallowed thickly. “Oh.”

“But, I’m not going to do any of those things.” James thrust against Morgan, unable to keep his hips still.

Morgan thrust back, clearly needing more than James was giving him. “You’re not?”

James leaned forward and nipped the other man’s lower lip, pulling back slightly before releasing it. “Not yet.”

“When?” the other man choked out.

“Here’s the thing, Morgs…if this is going to make you run from me like it did last time…” His voice cracked a little on that last word as ten years’ worth of guilt choked him. “Make you run from the things that are most important to you, it’s not happening. Not now, not ever.”

Lips slightly parted and gaze hungry, Morgan shook his head, wordlessly.

James sobered. “If all I ever am to you is your friend, I’d rather have that, than tonight…no matter how fucking hot I know it would be.”

Morgan met his gaze and James couldn’t look away if he wanted to.

“I’m not looking to pick out china patterns with you—you don’t need to worry about that,” James rushed to say. “But no matter how hard I want to make you come…no matter how badly I want to feel your mouth around my cock, I’m not willing to be the cause of not seeing you again for another ten years.”

Morgan fisted the front of James’ shirt. “When’d you get so fucking noble?” Without waiting for an answer, he yanked James forward and captured his lips, pushing inside and taking his mouth as thoroughly as James had claimed his moments before.
